Living in Allestree

Allestree is Derby's northernmost suburb, about two miles north of the city centre on the A6, with a population of around 13,600. It is recorded in the Domesday Book and joined Derby in 1968. The old village centre around Park Lane, Cornhill and St Edmund's Close is a conservation area, with St Edmund's Church, the Red Cow pub and Yew Tree Cottage, a 17th century thatched house.

It is largely residential, with Park Farm Shopping Centre on Birchover Way for shops, a doctors' surgery and a library. Allestree Park covers over 319 acres, and the University of Derby's main campus is on Kedleston Road.

Darley Abbey, next door on the west bank of the Derwent, is a former mill village and part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.

Homes in Allestree

Much of Allestree was built in two waves, in the 1930s and again in the 1960s and 1970s around Park Farm and Blenheim Drive. Older homes are found in the conservation area around the old village centre.

In Darley Abbey, more than 130 workers' houses built by the Evans family between 1792 and 1826 survive, including Flat Square, Brick Row and Lavender Row, and the village is a conservation area.
