Living in Ripley

Ripley is a market town in Amber Valley, with 20,633 residents in the civil parish at the 2021 census. It appears in the Domesday Book, and a royal charter of 1251 granted it a weekly market and an annual fair. Ripley Fair is older than Nottingham Goose Fair.

The town grew with the Butterley Company, formed in 1790, which worked in engineering, steel, coal, quarrying and bricks. Its engineering site closed and was demolished in 2010. The Town Hall was built as a market hall in 1880, and Derbyshire Constabulary has its headquarters at Butterley Hall.

Ripley has a community hospital with a minor accident and emergency unit, and the Ripley Music Festival has run since 2001.

Homes in Ripley

Codnor and Ripley form one built up area, so the line between them is not always obvious. Codnor and Swanwick are separate parishes, and council tax in both is a little lower than in Ripley itself.

If you are thinking of moving or selling, the sold prices further down this page show what has changed hands in Ripley over the last year.
