Living in Belper

Belper is a market town on the River Derwent, north of Derby, with 21,440 residents at the 2021 census. It is in the Amber Valley district of Derbyshire.

The town was a nail making centre from the Middle Ages and one of the first mill towns of the Industrial Revolution. Jedediah Strutt, a partner of Richard Arkwright, built a water powered cotton mill here in the late 18th century, and Belper was the first place in the UK to have gas lighting. It is one of the four main settlements of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2001.

King Street and Bridge Street are the main shopping streets. Belper School was rated Good in every area in 2025, and three of the town's parks and green spaces hold Green Flag status.

Homes in Belper

Part of eastern Belper, around Openwood Road and the Kilburn Lane stretch of the A609, falls inside Denby parish rather than Belper, so council tax there is slightly different from the rest of the town.

If you are thinking of moving or selling, the sold prices further down this page show what has changed hands in Belper over the last year.
